Having a horse that is anxious or under stress is not uncommon. The source can be just about anything. From a prior owner, a physical ailment that you haven’t uncovered or just plain nervous genes. Sometimes it can be as simple as a deficiency in Magnesium. What’s so important about this is that having an anxious horse can make riding very uncomfortable and even dangerous.

Many horse owners now give their horses equine calming supplements. These come in many forms and some are much more controversial than others. Magnesium supplements are one and can help your horse by relaxing muscles, slowing heart rate, and slowing down the absorption of sugars in the digestive system. Different equine Calming Pastes generally contain Magnesium, among other things and are popular products.

There is also an Herbal Blend for Mares that is a supplement designed to regulate your mares cycle and smooth aggression, irritability and mood swings that can accompany it. Strictly Equine Ease Up is made of natural ingredients of Magnesium, Taurine, Thiamine, B1 and Inositaol to bring on calming in your horse. Valerian Root is the main ingredient in Riva’s Calm and Cool, which is designed to cure long term stress.

The use of Trytophan to calm horses is something that is still being studied and questioned. Trytophan is an amino acid that the body uses to build seratonin, that essentially will make us less fearful and stressed. Works well in people, dogs, pigs, and even fish. Horses? Not so sure about that yet. What has been shown is that high doses of Tryptophan will negatively affect a horses’ endurance level.

If you do have a nervous or stressed out horse, there are things that you can do to help. However, it’s important that you first consult your horses’ vet before starting any of these supplements, particularly to be sure that there isn’t a physical element to the stress and anxiety that you need to address. Once you do that, you can both be on the road to calmer ride.

Horses experience many of the similar problems as we do, for example bruise and scrapes, but other than these, they face many problems that are more intricate too. For example—foot swelling, urine-trenched tail, wounds, bug bites, sting nettles and much more. In the olden times, experienced equestrians had their own-patented techniques to take care of their horses in their stables. Nowadays the equestrians have adapted these traditional home remedies. Below are some of them.

Home Remedies for your Horse

Vinegar- The horse owners are generally sick of the yellow, urine sopping tail on their pretty white horse. Not all the pricey bluing shampoo available removes the stains completely. Vinegar is the best home remedy for horse facing this problem. Drench the tail in white plain vinegar for just 5 minutes, prior to washing and taming it normally. You will notice some bubbles there, which are actually cutting down the stains of urine, resulting in the nice white tail. Vinegar is very good for the hair, and contributes to a sparkly, better tail! Using vinegar weekly may help to avert urine from being too entrenched on the tail.
Vinegar is not only good for the hairs but also very helpful for the horses having stones in their intestines (enteroliths). A cup of Vinegar Apple Cider mixed in the food twice a day helps reducing the pH level, and reduce the stone formation.
Vinegar is a natural insect repellant. Vinegar when added in food or sprayed directly on the horse acts as a wonderful natural insect repellent.

2. WD-40- The wonderful rust-buster has a glut of horse related uses. When sprayed into the mane or tail, WD-40 works as a great detangle, and works far better than most expensive products available in the market. A little bit of WD-40 when sprayed directly into tangled areas makes brushing very easy through the tangles. Be careful using WD-40 before riding- it is a bit slippery so the reins may slip off your hands.

3. Clorox Bleach- One of the most importunate hoof associated problems known to horse owners is Thrush. There are several products available in the market to conflict thrush, but they are very expensive. Old-time equestrians generally recommend bleach as a good home remedy for horse owners to combat thrush. When bleach is dispensed into a spray bottle and sprayed a thin coat of it to a clean, selected hoof once every day for several days it helps in eradicating thrush quickly. Application of bleach weekly helps to prevent other problems also. Beware bleach’s contact to the horse’s skin may cause sting and burn.

4. Sugar- There are several creams, salves, and sprays that are easily obtainable and helpful to combat horse wounds, and everybody has their own preferred product. For obstinate, infected wounds, natural white sugar application on the wound may help to fight infection, and fast healing. The sugar is effective in changing the pH of the wound, formulating an unfriendly environment for bacteria, which helps to clear out necrotic tissue and help in healing wounds. Thus, sugar acts as a great home remedy for horses.

5. Diapers- Foot swelling is a frustrating problem, which often needs days and weeks of vigilant treatment, along with bandaging as it heals to keep the foot clean. Instead of squandering money on dressing material such as the elastikon and vet wrap, wrap a kid’s diaper to the base of the foot with the duct tape. The diaper will keep medications and poultices in place stay for long time than regular bandage material, and the additional padding will help the foot be more at ease as it heals.

Summary–

However, your local tack store is the good source for all the necessary things you horse need, but these home remedies can save you money, time, and may resolve the common horse-related troubles. Try these time-tested remedies rather than reaching for the pricey bottle-, you will note that these works better.

All the above-mentioned home remedies for horses help you look after your horse at the same time avoiding expensive trips to the veterinarian for small problems.

Horse Home Remedies

in need of a good home remedy for keeping insects off horses?

flies, mosquitos, etc!

Mix equal parts of water, skin so soft and apple cider vinegar. Put in a spray bottle and spray on your horse daily.

Horse riding could be an unharmed and exceptionally pleasing hobby if the rider follows the riding safety measures to minimize risks. However, by knowing the riding safety rules, the risk of injury can be reduced to a great extent.

Riders must be aware of the highway rules and evade busy or main roads if possible. Horses are very impulsive and if your rein is loose, it may lead to a mishap.

Riding Lessons

Untrained riders must first get lessons from a professional trainer. These lessons may be expensive, but are worth it for riding safely. Until you get the proper riding lessons do not come on the traffic road to ride.

Road Position

Riders must ride on the left side of the road, and must never ride more than two side by side. Riding two abreast is recommended particularly if you are riding an inexperienced or young horse, and the trained horse being almost in centre of the road. There must always be a space equal to a horse’s length between every horse being ridden after another. Riders must not ride on bridleway but can ride on grass porches if local state laws do not forbid it.

Hazards

Keep an eye on the traffic behind you and constantly listen and look for hazards that may panic the horse. Gratuitous hazards must be avoided by taking a diversion if feasible so as not to distress the horse.

Turning and Junctions

Riders must always be on the left side of the road even when reaching a junction and planning to turn towards right. Always look at the traffic and give signal before turning to any direction to specify your intention. When indicating your plan to turn right or left make sure that your belt is in the hand which remains on the reins and clutch your other arm out straight for 3 seconds so that adjoining traffic are able to see your the signal clearly. Always pay attention to the traffic and be ready to stop at a turn before turning if needed.

Additional Signals

You may require some additional signal at times, mainly if the rider is facing some problem with the horse. Hold out your right arm and wave it up and down slowly, this signifies an impending driver to slow down, while the arm out showing the palm of the hand with fingers pointing upwards indicates the car driver that the rider wants him to stop.

Always Wear a Helmet

Wearing a well-fitted and certified horse-riding helmet is a major aspect of riding safety. Horse riding helmets are different from the bicycle helmets, as these are designed in such a manner to save the back of your head. The horse riding accidents mostly result in a back head injury.

Stirrup Safety

To protect your foot from tripping through the stirrups wear a boot with a good heel. If you cannot get your foot free during an accident, you may be dragged appallingly. You can use riding safety stirrups like the break away stirrup, toe stirrup or the peacock stirrup as some additional dragging precautions.

Horse riding may be both elating and exasperating sometimes during the ride. If the rider fails to understand and appreciate the basics of horse temper or riding procedure then the riding experience may be less enjoyable. The reverse is just as true, if you have a genuine concern and revere for the horse, its capabilities united with an acquired or natural aptitude for communiqué, and riding procedure then you will definitely experience a great and exhilarating horse ride.

With the purpose to develop effectual communication between rider and the horse, the first and most significant aspect is the “trust.” A credulous relationship developed between you and your horse help you to understand of your horse’s mind-set, conduct, and behavior. This relationship helps to know whether your horse is timid and needs support, is forward and bold and thus requires an expert rider, or is they obedient and thus able to go after your leads and direction.

One of the main areas to practice whilst on the ground is the matter of ‘value for space’. This refers to both your respect for horse’s space and the horse’s respect for your space. Bodily touch is a good manner to establish a pleasing bond between you and the horse, For instance, moving your hand on the horse’s back, shoulder, and head– then applying a little pressure to instruct your horse to move away from your space. Along with the groundwork, understanding the mechanics and the horse physiology benefits the riders greatly.

Dressage is another technique of training the horse; here the riders employ a variety of aids such as the hands, legs, seats, whips, and spurs to communicate with the horse and to know about the horse’s comfort or discomfort.

These training techniques include applying force from your legs which insists the horse to move, while putting your legs in a unlike place urges the horse to be in its position. Riders may also use their seats to push the horse or slow the horse in one or the other direction.

Being a rider if you understand the horse’s behavior beforehand it helps you to anticipate the horse’s conduct and reactions.

For example, if a horse generally appears prepared and all set to work, but on next day shows reluctance and anger, then this signifies that something is definitely wrong–either with you the rider or with the horse. Predicting the horse’s response can help you make out which aids to use, and how to be a step ahead of your horse.

Riders must know the fact that horses responds in a different way for two reasons; one is to obtain comfort and the other is to avoid pain. The main point of focus in any kind of the horse training is making the situation and position comfortable for the horse, and to make sure that any of our reaction must not be uncomfortable for the horse. Riders must remember that rather than blaming the horse, they have to realize that a disobedient horse is generally the result some kind of misconduct of the rider who is not correctly communicating.

The three things you need to train your horse are the three Ps that are persistence, patience, and positive strengthening. Idyllically, you should begin the horse training when he still is a foal. Fundamental ground manners have to be taught from his early age, as when he grows old he has to be trained about riding and saddles.

The training will be much easier if you have the foal’s mother around him, as he will obviously copy her behaviors. If not the mother, arrange any other trained horse with which the foal spends time. Young horses generally learn from the grown-up ones present in the herd. For instance, you do not have to teach a horse in the meadow how to graze up or how to go to the water and slurp. They learn these basic things by watching the other horses in the herd.

Begin by taking two horses together- the untrained foal and well-trained horse – alongside with you in the center. The most secure place for you is to stand to the left of the untrained horse’s shoulder, with the trained horse on your left. A young horse may abruptly decide to run off or to kick off his heels, so take care that you do not drape the lead rope on your hand or anywhere else, that puts you at risk. You may also use the pony technique if you have a quiet horse. Generally, the foals are comfortable following them. You can do this by just towing the student horse behind with longer lead cord. It makes the young horse understand that he has to follow the pony.

If you cannot afford having other horses, all that you can do is to tag along the three Ps–persistence, patience, and positive strengthening. You have to be persistent and calm while training your horse, never give up.

Persistence means whenever you apply a force you constantly do it in a way that let the horse to dispose off that pressure by moving in the correct direction. The pressure created makes the horse understand that if he your directions the pressure disposes off. Thus, he starts following you without any aggravation.

Patience is the second key of horse training. When he calmly walks with you in straight lines, take a small left turn whist keeping the space. If he hordes you, push him away with your right hand and hold your arm out to the proper space. After that, try taking a right turn maintaining the same safety distance between you and the horse. Still use your right hand to direct him into the correct zone. You should reward him by freeing the pressure on the lead cord when he steps in the correct direction.

Positive strengthening makes the horse comfortable. Negative attitude makes the horse stressful, and raise its anxiety level and make him tense. A horse can learn only when he is relaxed. A tense horse will just look for a way to escape, and if he cannot he, either will gust or he will shut down.

Horseback riding is full of fun and pleasure. The correct saddle is one of the most significant pieces of horse riding attire. Beneath are some points, which would help you selecting the right saddle for your horse–

Investigate about the type of saddle you need. There are different kinds of saddles available in the market, which includes- show saddles, dressage saddles, hunting, general, and western saddles. Your selection depends on what type of riding you do. The general or western saddles are most popular saddles for frivolous riding. Inquire about a few things from the shopkeeper when you go to buy a saddle such as the right tree size, the size bar you need, the material of the tree, etc.

The correct measurements are necessary for your saddle to fit correctly. If you think that any saddle will fit on your horse, you are mistaken. The second delusion in new riders mind is that they should buy the saddle that fits to their body type only but the fact is that it first has to be fit for your horse. A small saddle will not be fit for a big horse and similarly too big saddle will not fit properly on the small horse.

The budget is of course a very important factor to think over. If your pockets don’t allow for a new saddle you can also purchase a used one. However, the new saddles may be most comfortable for your horse but a fine used saddle can also be a good choice provided it fits properly. If you are still a learner, then a used saddle is the best choice. The different prices of the saddles are according to the material used in making it. The leather saddles are generally more expensive than the saddles made through other materials.

Get a one-inch thick pad or a blanket to keep under the saddle. Place the saddle over it. After tightening check thoroughly that it is not pinching your horse or is too tight on any body part of your horse. Check whether you can slide three fingers beneath the saddletree. The saddle must not be too long and excessively far up on the facade of your horse’s body. Confirm that the stirrups are lynching uniformly and the saddle is level.

When you are now sure that the saddle correctly fits your horse then consider your own saddle fit requirements, too. Your horse may feel okay but if the saddle is not fit for you, you might not have a pleasant ride. You may try sitting in some saddles at the shop or may try it on your horse first. It is up to your own preference. Before paying for it make sure that the width and the depth is fit for your seat. Saddle shops generally have the charts showing the ideal measurements of saddles according to your height and weight. You can select an ideal saddle for you following that chart. Now you are all set to saddle up your horse and have a delightful ride!

Choosing A Horse Saddle

What is Your Favorite Saddle Brand?

This question relates to junior hunter/equitation riders. I would like to know which saddle brand you prefer and why, and what other brands have your tried in the past and what were their pros/cons.

I understand that choosing a saddle has a lot to do with personal preference and fitting the horse. I am in the process of buying a new saddle and would greatly appreciate your thoughts! Serious competitors only please!

Here is a helpful list of brands that I can think of off the top of my head:

- CWD
- Bates
- Beval
- Collegiate
- Crosby
- Henri de Rivel
- Pessoa
- Stubben
- Wintec
- Antares
- Devoucoux
- Butet
- PJ Delgrange
- Hermes
- Tadcoffin

Throughout the years, I’ve had Crosbys, Crumps and various other makes of English saddle, however the saddle that is STILL with me after 37 years is my old Stubben Siegfried. Stubbens hold their value, besides having a deeper seat that keeps you IN it! Especially when you’re going over larger fences.

IF you’ve got the money and you’re showing A shows and hunters, go for the Hermes. It’s a prestige thing because Hermes were the innovators of the close contact saddles.

There’s always Kieffer, Passier and Courbette which are also European brands and hold their value.

Saddles like Wintecs, don’t hold up over time, because of their materials used and the fact that the trees have no give to them you’re limited to what type of horse your saddle will fit, whereas something with the old style spring tree will fit a wider range of horses. My old Siegfried is made on a WIDE spring tree and I’d had it on everything from mutton withered QHs to Arabs and even narrower TBs without issue.

Henri de Rivels, Pessoas and such are cheaper versions of the Crosbys, Crumps and other close contact saddles and are made in Argentina/India. Some use French leather, but the craftsmanship is lacking and they don’t hold up over time.

I hope that this helps in your selection.

To buy a horse is a huge venture and thus owning it need lots of money and time. Before paying for it, make sure that the one you are buying fits to your personality. If you get the right horse then you can have a happy and long relationship.

Preparation

Get in touch with some good trainers and let them know that you are planning to buy a horse. They often have clients selling a horse.

Gain some knowledge about horse management such as the basic horse health and the first aid.

Check out, whether tack shops, boarding facilities, feed stores, hay, farriers, vets are available in your vicinity.

Figure out the expenses you are going to face in keeping a horse. Consult with the horse owners and know about the necessary expenses of keeping a horse.

Find an appropriate place to keep the horse. Inquire in local riding schools and tack shops.

Visit a few boarding amenities and discuss about hours, the price, feeding timetable, as well as what will be your duties.

Hire a space or a yard to keep your horse in advance. The high-quality yards, are hardly ever available as they fill fast.

Consult an expert to help you to plan fencing if you want to keep the horse in your house.

Searching for Your Horse

Make a list of your expectations including the, gender, size, health, age, color, price, training, pedigree and breed.

Word of mouth is the finest way to buy a horse. Discuss it with the farriers, instructors, tack shop owners, and vets.

Put ‘Horse Wanted’ pamphlets in local vet clinics, tack shops, search in national and local horse magazines, and on the Internet.

Keep an eye on the HORSE SALE ads in national and local horse magazines, newspapers, and internet.

It would be best to buy a used horse with a better temper, if you are very new to horse riding.

Assessing a Horse

Confirm everything from the horse seller

History and breeding

The age, color, height and breed

Reason for sale

Medical history and Competition

Any bad habits such as, bucking, kicking, cribbing

The horse’s present management

Any registrations and security markings

Whether the tack tools are included in the price

How fine the horse moves

Buying the Horse

Negotiate on the rates with seller.

Arrange a vet checkup for the horse before paying for it.

Ask about its feed from the owner. Buy some feed from the existing owner if needed.

Get the horse insured before transporting him.

Prepare the safe area with all the necessary equipments.

Arrange the horse transportation.

Give your horse some time to settle in new place.

Some warnings before you buy a horse

Do not purchase a disease-prone, old aged, untrained, or dangerous horse just for the reason that it is cheap or looks cute. The untaught and precarious horses will not earn their keep, and can hurt someone.

Get yourself acquainted with the difference between a stallion and a gelding, as some fraud sellers may sell you of a redundant stallion by convincing you that it is a gelding.

Do not keep your horse alone at home until he adjusts himself. In case you have to leave him alone at your home, leave a friend with him like a goat, an old retired horse, a mini horse, or any another alike creature.

Horse transportation may sound like a simple idea, but it requires much planning, and action implicated than one may think. You should consider on some important issues such as making your horse ready for actions that would be taken while in transportation. One of the intricate areas is how to prepare your horse properly for voyage. The matter of shipping boots and bandaging are covered under this area. Go through this article to get some useful tips regarding hassle free transportation both for you and your horses.

Veterinarian checkup—Make sure that your horse has gone through the veterinarian check up within 4 weeks of the voyage, he is fit, and fine to bear the journey and that he is had all his vaccinations. This particularly is very important if the journey is long. Along with this, practice the trailer with your horse, so that he may get familiarize with the process.

Shipping/bandaging boots – people generally ignore this factor, as they do not feel the need to bandage their horse’s legs or use the shipping boots. However, this is a very important aspect to be kept in mind while horse transportation. Bandaging is not necessary if your horse does not have shoes, but if your horse has shoes then a proper bandaging is necessary to prevent coronet. Wrap the bandages tightly and make sure that any straw and hay is not stuck in the bandage otherwise, it will irritate your horse during the entire voyage. If your horse has a tendency of kicking a lot then avoid using the shipping boots as he could injure himself by doing so. Though shipping boots may add much heat during the transportation but overall it a safe choice for voyage. Give your horse enough time to be accustomed wearing them before the journey.

The Vehicle Preparation – the vehicle your horse will be transporting in must be in a good condition. All parts must be in working condition and confirm there is no missing parts or rust in the vehicle. Keeping some spare parts for the trailer is also a great idea. Adequate ventilation is must in horse transportation since horses are inclined to over heating.

Food and water– dehydration is the most common problem witnessed during the shipping so make sure there is enough water for your horse in the trailer. Serve him water after every four hours to prevent the dehydration. Prefer hay instead of the horse grain or the rich feed as they may cause some problem in the large intestine of the horse. Hay also helps preventing dehydration as it retains water in the gut. Wash away the urine and manure at each stop to prevent the respiratory infections.

Horse transportation requires proper planning and must not be attempted a night before leaving. Plan at least a week ahead of the departure. Keep the above-mentioned tips in mind for your horse transportation to assure a safe and comfortable ride for your horse and for yourself.

If you want your horse to stop and stand still you have to get his attention first. When you get your horse’s attention, then you have to use your body pose to create shapes and pressures, which will then create a sense in the horse that he has to stop or to move right, left or forward. You can also instruct him to stand at rest while you or the furrier works around him, or you want to set his saddle. You must try building a bond with the horse by brushing or scratching the places the horse loves to be brushed up. When you do so the horse moves around and change his position to explain you where exactly he wants you to scrape. The shoulder of the horse is the best place to start with. Work out steadily from this comfortable zone to spots that are intuitively itchy for the horse such as scratching from his shrivels up his neck, behind his front legs or in the area of his back legs. In the start, you may tie up your horse. However, the finest way to brush up is to leave the horse loose in a large place so that he could move around to explain you were exactly he wants to be brushed or he may leave the session if he wants. After you build a relation with your horse, you can start training him to stop or to stand still. Below are some steps to follow if you want your horse to stop or stand still –

1. When you tie up your horse and he get annoyed, observe the underlying cause instead of focusing on the behavior itself. If you want to change the behavior of your horse, you have to deal with his anxiety and help him feel relaxed about being tied.

2. Be calm and patient. Horse training takes consistency and time. You cannot attain behavioral change by hastening or being annoyed. Set up time explicitly to work with your horse on this matter.

3. Modify his physical state to adjust his mental state. Horses that are busy when tied up have a disturbed frame with high head, scissor legs, and inverted back. This body frame retains adrenaline pumping into his blood stream increasing his anxiety and stress level. You should make him feel that he can stand straight in four square.

4. The horse may not be able to stand still unless he finds balance, which comes from being square, standing straight, and a level neck. You have to correct his position till he gets that balance and maintains it himself.

5. Having straightness is very important. Make sure that the horse’s spine is aligned from nose to tail. Horse feels the straightness when his left hind lines up straight after its left fore and the right hind lines up straight behind its right fore.

6. When the horse’s feet are in scissor position, he is prepared mentally to escape. When his feet are four square, it is balanced and feels as if it is standing in a box and is parked. You have to encourage him to stand in a four square by instructing him to take a step forwards or backwards.

Train Horse to Stop

How do I train my horse to do a proper rollback?

I have been working with my appaloosa gelding for a while now and i have him backing and stopping on a dime but i’m having trouble getting him to do rollbacks. I have been stopping him along side the fence and then backing him up so his butt is against the fence and then tilting his head to one side and kicking him with my opposite foot, but he’s started to like jump to the other side and i’m not sure what im doing wrong or what im not doing. Please Help!

Training for rollbacks takes a lot of practice.

work on first getting him to move off your leg and rein really well at a walk, jog, and lope. just randomly stop him and ask him to back and then turn 90 degrees. after you think that he’s really listening you and respecting your leg and reins then start loping some circles next to a rail.

ask him to stop next to the rail, about 5 feet away and back him up fast then turn the 180 degrees toward the rail and lope off again in the same circle. do a lot of these. and switch it up with the walk and jog.
the key is to get him using his hindquarters and to really get up underneath himself so he can plant that leg and pick up his front end and turn.

eventually cut out the backing up. all thats doing is getting him on his hindquarters for the turn. make sure that you’re stopping and backing up fast. you want him to think that the stop also includes the back up.

practice rollbacks into the fence and away and do it on both leads.
good luck (:

How do I get my horse to go on the rail correctly?

Whenever I try to get my horse on the rail. She will do it just fine but with her nose completely pointed towards the rail. Pulling on the outside rein a bit and using leg pressure to keep her at the wall doesn’t work. She ends up completely ignoring the leg pressure and going to the inside of the arena, off the rail. She doesn’t really need to learn how to respond to leg pressure because she responds to it wonderfully doing anything else (such as circles) but my horse always has her head completely pushed into the wall. Any help?

If your using any kind of snaffle bit (O ring, D ring, full cheek) then DO NOT USE INDIRECT REINING this will only serve to confuse your horse, because that not the way they are meant to be used (they work on direct pressure on the corners of your horses mouth).

I had a trainer who had me do this with my horses and it only made the problem worse. I have also seen other horses really messed up because riders used indirect pressure with snaffle.

What worked really well for me was practicing circling onto the rail and keeping the horse bent that way. I also will to a lot of side passing onto and off the rail.

You also want to make sure that when your asking for bend that you don’t jerk on the horses mouth, or pull to hard because the horses Natural reaction to a jerk is to jerk back.

You might also check your bit for sharp edges that might be making your horse uncomfortable, and you might try a different kind of bit, like some type of curb so you could use indirect pressure.

If you are planning to buy a horse, it is essential to consider expenses involved in buying a horse plus the costs implicated in keeping a horse. Below is an estimated guide of the expected costs concerned with keeping a horse.

Field Rent

Some people such as the farmer generally have the fields available on rent for horses, which are also very reasonable at about $10 per week. The horse owners are themselves responsible for the maintenance of the field as these fields usually have the least facilities. Horse owners mostly prefer to keep their horses at a Livery Yard as these yards are well maintained and facilitated completely including the schooling arenas, tack rooms, jumps, muckheap, etc. Grass Livery costs about $20-$25 per week, DIY Stabled Livery costs about $30-$40 per week, and Full livery costs about $100-$150 per week. There are extra charges for the duties or the extra care of the horses kept there.

Hay, Shavings and straw

The horses kept on the grass livery hay do not need to be fed generally except in the winters when the grass is scarce. The amount of hay needed depends upon the size and the type of the pony. Probably some hay would be needed for the horse for about five months in a year, which will cost about $10 a week. In case of the stabled horses, hay is required all through the year to balance for the scarce of grass while stabled and this will cost about $10 a week all through the year. In addition, some form of stable bedding is required, usually straw or shavings are used for this and this can add a further $10-$20 per week to the costs all through the year.

Feed

The quantity of feed necessary will depend on the size and type of the horse, its work out routine and whether it is at grass or is stabled. A resilient horse or pony living out all the year and only getting light work out may need less amount of feed. A horse doing regular exercise may need some solid feed and a stabled horse, with customary exhausting exercise may need some extra feed all through the year which costs about $5-10 per week.

Insurance and Vet’s Fees

Every pony or a horse needs yearly inoculations against Tetanus and Influenza and are estimated to cost about $35 per year for the vaccination and about $35 consultation charges from the vet. Veterinarian fees in cases of accidents or illness can be expensive, thus it is beneficial to get your horse insured rather than paying out several hundred pounds for an incident. The expenditure of insurance to cover veterinarian’s fees may vary according to the type of cover taken and the price of the pony or the horse but generally can be expected about $20-$40 a month.

Farrier

Keeping a horse require regular visits from the farrier as horse’s feet grown continually and need trimming. This may cost about $50-$55 for shoeing the horse and about $25 for trimming per visit.

Dentist

Every visit of a dentist may cost about $50-$70.

Extras

Though the major regular costs are mentioned above, there are many unexpected expenses also, such as purchasing medical items for small cuts, shampoos; repairing of rugs and tacks etc.

Cost to Keep A Horse

How much does it cost to own and keep a horse?

How often do they need to be ridden and the stable cleaned out etc?

How much roughly would it cost for 1 horse to be kept in a stable (run by other people)?

Thanks so much for your help

depending on your area it can be between 300-700$ just call stables in your area so you know which end of the spectrum it is for you. also i ride my horses daily but they are at home so it is easier for me. when i used to board my horses and work i did a lease with a non horse owner ( i found her on craigslist she responded to my ad) you have to have a well mannered well broke horse to do this and the teenage girl paid me $200 a month to go out and ride my horse 3 days a week so it offset my boarding cost. I would just call around and as long as you can spend time with your horse 3 days a week i think you should be fine

Can these horse breeds be used for jumping in show?

Gypsy Vanner?

Friesian?

What other kind of shows can these horses show in?

These breeds of horses were bred basically for harness work, some have been popular for dressage but jumping is not in their resume. Now there have been some great draft and thoroughbred crosses that have been fantastic as jumpers (Way back when, we used to call them “Irish Hunters”.).
